Ronald Smith

Ronald J. “Roper” Smith, age 76, of Winona, passed away on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, at his home.

Ron was born on May 15, 1944, in Arcadia, WI, to Cyril and Ravanna (Mrozek) Smith.  Following high school, he honorably served his country with the United States Army and was a member of the American Legion.

In his younger days, Ron enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid bowler.  He loved Country and Western music, Western movies, and was a great dancer.  He will be remembered for his homemade horseradish, always having a pocket full of candy, and for the special place he held in his heart for his dogs.  During the week, he looked forward to spending time at his social club, Steiny’s, and he enjoyed his car ride through town on his “daily route.”

Ron was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

Ron is lovingly survived by his wife, Sandy; brothers: David (Sandra) Smith, and Keith (Tammy) Smith; his dog, Duchess; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; step-father: Sylvester; a sister and brother-in-law: Shirley and Daniel Dingfelder; and his beloved dog, Shadow.

Visitation will be held from 9 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM on Monday, November 2, 2020, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.  The Very Reverend Mark C. McNea will officiate.  Those attending will be required to wear a mask and to follow social distancing guidelines.

Ron will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 of Winona will provide military honors.

Pallbearers will be:  Keith Smith, Chad Smith, David Smith, Jr., Robert Marcum, Matthew Marcum, and Don Mierau.

In lieu of flowers, that family would appreciate memorials to the Winona Area Humane Society,  the St. Jude Children’s Hospital, or to a charity of choice.
