Gerald Frosch

Gerald W. Frosch, age 95, of Winona, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home on Saturday, October 24, 2020, surrounded by his family.

He was born on June 15, 1925, in Winona, to Perry and Erna (Matzke) Frosch. Raised in Winona, his family would later move to a farm near Houston, MN, where Gerald completed his education, graduating from the Houston High School in 1943.

Gerald was united in marriage with Muriel R. Ruud on June18, 1948, at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, and she preceded him in death on July 26, 2017.

In 1947, Gerald relocated to Winona, where he joined the H. Choate and Company as an assistant display manager and home furnishings salesperson. Gerald later purchased the Choate Company, which he owned and operated until 1980.  He then went to work for Engrav’s decorating store in Winona, where he was employed until his retirement.  Gerald proudly served the Winona retail community for 63 years.

He also served his community as a member of the following organizations: the Kiwanis Noon Club, where he was on its board and served as president; a charter member of the Winona YMCA, where he was active for many years, serving on its board as vice-president and president; a charter member of the Sauer Memorial Home (Sauer Health Care) board of directors, serving as vice-president and president, and also assisted with their weekly church services; and he also served on the Winona Athletic Board.

Gerald was a long-time active member of St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winona, serving on the church council, board of elders, board of property, and as president and vice-president of the congregation.  He also served as a Sunday School teacher, was the cook for the Wednesday morning men’s Bible study, and together with Muriel, they were the youth leaders of the congregation for many years.

He will be remembered for his love of flying, and as an avid golfer, he was a member of either Westfield or the Winona Country Club since 1955.

Gerald’s greatest gift has been his dedication to God and to his family.  It was his daily witness by the way he lived his life and his unwavering faith that showed his true dedication to God.  It was this strong faith that carried him through the most difficult times of his life.  Gerald led by example, and that good character is a very precious gift to be valued and protected.

He is lovingly survived by his children: Dianne (Craig) Zeches, and Paul (Mary) Frosch; daughter-in-law: Susan (Dan) Frosch-Erickson; grandchildren: Tim (Nicole) Zeches; Brian (Katelyn) Zeches; Betsy (Brad) Walker; Michael (Megan) Zeches; Rebecca (Leonard) Jordan; Joel (Melissa) Zeches; Peter (Anne) Frosch; Andrew (Rachel) Frosch; Elizabeth (Andrew) Taylor; Samuel Frosch; and Amanda (Zachary) Wyman; 21 great-grandchildren; as well as two nieces, one nephew, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Mark in 1988; his parents; and a brother, Daniel Frosch.

A private family funeral service will be held.

Gerald will be laid to rest in the Money Creek Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Gerald’s grandsons.

The family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church; Winona Health Hospice Services; or to the Callista Court Porch Fund.
