Clifford Kanz

Clifford G. “Cliff” Kanz, age 90, of Winona, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2020, at Lake Winona Manor.

He was born on July 22, 1930, in Winona, to Joseph and Isabelle (Verdick) Kanz.  Cliff honorably served his country with the United States Army, where he was stationed in Japan with the Army aircraft anti-artillery division. He was proud of his service to his country, and often spoke highly of his military experiences.

Cliff was united in marriage with Betty Ann Grant on April 9, 1955, in Winona, and they were blessed with three children: Wayne (Maryellen) Kanz, Wanda (Kevin) Kuehn, and Wendy (Tom) Bublitz; grandchildren: Jennifer (Jeremy) Corey; A.J. (Rachel) Kanz; Jamie (Jason) Marshall; Kyle Hauser; Grant Hauser; Josh (Michelle) Bublitz; Justin (Christina Reif) Bublitz; Brook and Wade Meyer; Kelly and David Dockter; great-grandchildren: Gwen, Hope, Aaliyah, Carter, Sawyer, Hoyt, McKenna, Caiden, Braelee, Blakelyn, Austin, and Phillip.  He is also survived by his brother: Leroy Kanz; in-laws: Becky Kanz; Don “Butch” Wieczorek, Sr.; Phylis Lang; Helen Ebertowski; Bill and Judy Grant; Bob and Bonnie Grant; Joannie and Sam Sasser; and Joan and Ray Peterson; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws: Erma and Earl Grant; a grandson: Blake Hauser; his great-grandsons: Garret and Gavin Kanz; siblings: Don Kanz, Lorraine and Jerry Frahm, Deloris and George Lakey, Roger Kanz, Joan Wieczorek, and Jean and Gene Revoir; and in-laws: Janelle Kanz, Edwin and Betty Grant, Lawrence Grant, Eddie Ebertowski, Fred and Veronica Grant, and Gene Lang.

Cliff was a very dedicated employee and retiree of WinCraft in Winona – he built many friendships and memories during those years.  In his retirement, he was the manager of the Lake View Apartments, with his supporting wife, Betty, by his side.  Many of his tenants viewed him as their “guardian angel.”

He loved his family dearly and gave us life lessons that we will cherish forever.  He was kind, encouraging, and always there for us.

Cliff gave of his time and talents to the Winona community, especially the youth of Winona.  He took pride as a supervisor at the West End Rec Center and was awarded the Winona Jaycees Jack Frost for his dedication to the youth and community of Winona.

He was a member of the Minnesota ASA Umpire Association, and he officiated at many games at the local, district, state, and national levels. Cliff instilled sportsmanship values and gained many friendships through his years on the ballfield, and also found much enjoyment watching softball games at the Lake Winona ballparks.

Many lives were blessed and changed because our pathways crossed with Cliff Kanz – his helping hands were always there for his family and friends.
