Obituary

Betty J. Schneider, 93, a lifelong resident of Winona, MN died peacefully on Tuesday, August 25, 2020.

She was born October 13, 1926, an only child, to John (Jack) and Laura Zywicki. She attended grade school and high school in Winona and Mount Mary College. She married Bill Schneider on September 23, 1946 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona.

Betty was a homemaker who raised 6 children but also worked at Margie’s Dairy Cottage and Zywicki Invesment Co., her Father’s apartment rental business. She volunteered by delivering Meals on Wheels and also brought communion to those who were home-bound. She was best known for her chicken dumpling soup, homemade bread and apple pies. Betty was a storyteller, a great listener and greeted everyone with a hug.

Always having a strong faith in God, her actions toward others exemplified that. She attended daily Mass at St. Stan’s and received the Bishop’s Honor for leading the Holy Rosary for 32 years.  She also had an “in” with Saint Anthony who would help her find almost any lost item.

Betty loved to read, especially Danielle Steele’s love stories. In her sunroom on East Broadway, she would watch the many cars speed by while knitting slippers and many afghans for her Grandchildren. She also could play a mean game of 500 with her friends at Westfield Golf Club and later at the American Legion Club. Many hours were spent solving word puzzles. Her best times were sitting on the swing with Bill at their summer cottage listening to their favorite song, “The Days of Wine and Roses”. Betty and Bill were married 62 years until Bill’s death in 2009.

Survivors include her children, Carol (Clint) Sipe, Delavan Wisconsin, Maribeth (Steve) Price, Destrehan, Louisiana, Chris Waters (Zeke Bosteter) Winona, Paul (Wendy) Schneider, Winona, Sherry (Don) Boynton, Minnesota City, Mark (Kathy Bowman) Fountain City, Wisconsin; 14 Grandchildren: Keita (Rich) Sullivan, Erin (Scott) Purves and Emily Sipe (Stacy Hammel). Julie (Karl) Lirette and Laura (Kevin) Gardebled. Amy (Roger) Colson, Jessica Waters and Willi Waters. Brian (Carrie) Schneider and Derek (Whitney) Schneider. Sara Boynton and Emily (Joe) Solheid. Jade Schneider and Isaak Schneider; 18 Great-Grandchildren: Michelle, Ben, Willi, Sydney, Owen, Avery, Charlie, Jake, Isabela, Sophie, Caden, Hudson, Emmett, Eva, Rylan, Rylen, Michael and Eli; and 1 Great-great Grandchild: Colden.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill and her son-in-law, Mike Waters.

A Celebration of Betty's Life will be held at a later date.

Thank you to the staff from Winona Health Area Hospice Services and to the nurses and wonderful care at Sugar Loaf Senior Living. Often times the staff would hear Betty singing, “Show me the way to go home. I’m tired and I wanna go to bed”… Sweet dreams Mom!
