Wayne E. Hamernik

Wayne E. Hamernik, age 89, of Winona, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at Benedictine – Callista Court in Winona.

He was born on March 7, 1934, in Winona, to Joseph and Anna (Drugan) Hamernik.  Wayne honorably served his country with the United States Navy in Korea from 1952 – 1955.  He was united in marriage with Joan M. Fischer on August 17, 1957, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona.

Wayne was employed as a Journeyman Plumber for 42 years with O’Laughlin Plumbing and Heating in Winona until his retirement.

He was a member of the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 of Winona where he served as Commander and on the burial detail.  He was also a member of the BPOE Elks Lodge #327 in Winona, serving as a past Exalted Ruler.

Wayne will be remembered for his love of spending time outdoors golfing, barbecuing, and keeping his lawn and flowers meticulously.  He enjoyed going on cruises, bus trips, and sipping a good martini.   His greatest joy in life was his family, and he will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Wayne is lovingly survived by his wife, Joan; children: Kathryn (Tim Walters) Hamernik, Michael (Nancy) Hamernik, and Patricia Hamernik; grandchildren: Michael (Nicole) Padgett and Connie (Kyle) Gollnick; great-grandchildren: Evan, Gabby, and Zoie Padgett; and Texas, Mavryk, and Charlotte Gollnick; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including many who considered and called Wayne, “dad.”

He was preceded in death by his parents, and all his siblings: Joseph, Theresa, Vivian, and William.

Honoring his wishes, funeral services will be held privately for his family.  Wayne will be laid to rest at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, MN.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that memorials be directed to Winona Health Hospice Services, or to a charity of choice.
