Walter J. “Walt” Haag passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2026, in Winona, MN.
Walt was born on January 2, 1947, in Queens, NY, and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Walt was raised in an orphanage until the age of 18. He attended Midland College in Fremont, NE, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business education.
He was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Walt later returned to Midland College and completed his degree in elementary education. In 1978, he served as an elementary school principal, and completed his master’s degree in 1979.
Walt served proudly and honorably in the United States Army for 37 years with 17 years as a reservist and 20 years Active Guard Reserve (AGR). He continued his professional military education through the US Army War College. Walt retired from the military with the rank of Colonel.
After retiring from the military, Walt continued his dedication to healthcare and readiness, serving for seven years with Logistics Health, Inc., in La Crosse, WI. He retired as the Program Director of the Periodic Health Assessment Program.
Outside of work, Walt enjoyed reading, theater, golf, attending military functions, and he loved to dance.
Walt married the love of his life, Evelyn, on May 11, 1996. Walt’s service and devotion to his wife and country were the constants throughout his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Evelyn, and her children: Travis Babb and Justin (Y-vonne) Babb; his children: Jessica (Keith) and James; and grandchildren: Artemis and Douglas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Alice; siblings: Daniel, Marjorie, and Robert; and an uncle and aunt, James and Caroline King.
Walt will be remembered as a man of integrity, quiet strength, and diligent wit. His life was defined by service, leadership, and love.
Funeral services will be held privately for his family. Walt will be laid to rest with military honors at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, MN.
