Susan P. Steiner

Susan P. Steiner, age 93, of Winona, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, at Sugar Loaf Senior Living.

Sue was born in Winona to Dr. Irving and Ruth Steiner. She was an only child, but she grew up surrounded by her extended family, including Winona cousins Roger and Jim Mann, children of Hazel and Burr Mann.

With Sue’s departure we remember a life lived with joy and caring for others. We remember a laugh that was incredibly infectious and someone who enjoyed time with family and friends, cooking, gardening, bird watching, traveling, knitting, needlework, sewing, and reading.

She is survived by Jim’s three daughters: Evette Edmister, Heidi Mann, and Theresa Baxter; and her cousin, Don Nelson, age 99, of Sparks, Nevada.

With a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota in 1956, she began a 36 year career in Public Health as a nurse serving Winona County until her retirement in 1993. In the early years she oversaw 58 rural schools. She also led early childhood immunization clinics throughout schools county wide. Later, she worked at its inception with what is now Home Delivered Meals delivering to clients’ homes. She implemented the first Medicare Certified Home Care Agency in Winona County and served as a leader in several pilot projects including what is known today as SAIL. (Senior Agenda for Independent Living).

Sue stayed active in her community, supporting the arts, nature preservation, animal rescue, and public broadcasting.

Sue was also a lifelong member of St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Winona where she was an active volunteer. The funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s (corner of East Broadway and Lafayette Streets) on Friday, May 29, 2026, with visitation at 10:00 a.m., the service at 11:00 a.m., and a reception to follow at noon. The service will be live streamed at the following link “facebook.com/stpaulswinona”. Fr. Jon Spinello will officiate. The burial will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona following the reception.
