Roland W. Woodford

Roland W. Woodford, age 83, of Winona, passed away on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

He was born on January 3, 1943, in Winona, to William and Elinor (Volkman) Woodford. He was a graduate of Winona Senior High School and honorably served his country with the United States Navy.

Roland married Bonnie (Bublitz) Heroff in 1988, and she preceded him in death on July 6, 2018.

Roland earned his bachelor’s degree in education from Winona State University and completed his master’s degree with the University of Idaho. He was employed for 10 years with the Milwaukee Road Railroad, and then as an elementary teacher in Boise, ID, and Spring Valley, MN. Roland then served as a licensed social work with ORC Industries in Winona for 25 years until his retirement.

He was a long-time member of Faith Lutheran Church in Winona and the Sunset Lions Club where he also served as its President. Roland also enjoyed volunteering with Winona Health reading newspapers to the patients and residents.

Roland had a deep love for classic films and an extraordinary ability to recall even the most obscure movie facts and trivia. He was a gifted storyteller whose knowledge seemed endless, particularly when it came to railroad history and the rich history of the Winona area. Whether sharing a favorite movie scene, recounting a railroad tale, or reminiscing about local history, Roland delighted in passing along his knowledge and enthusiasm to family, friends, and anyone fortunate enough to spend time with him.

Roland is survived by his son, Chad Woodford of Illinois; grandsons, Charlie and Chase; step-children: Don (Camila) Heroff of Texas, and Greg (Hisami) Heroff of Japan; step-grandchildren: Madie, Sarah, Akari, Kai, and Kazuki; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; daughter-in-law, Devon; and a sister, Judith Kleiber.

Visitation will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Winona on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 10 AM until the funeral service at 11 AM. Pastor Greg Schaefer will officiate. Roland will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery.
