Robert (Bob) Charles Hanson Jr., age 67, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at his home in Winona, MN, due to a massive cardiac event.
He was born June 16, 1958 in St. Peter, MN, to Janet Karen Hanson (Betzing) and Robert Charles Hanson Sr.
Bob grew up in the east end of Winona, MN where many know him by the nickname his grandmother bestowed upon him because he was such a 'CHIPPER' baby. At age 17 Bob enlisted in the United States Navy and served for over 4 years of which he spent making cherished memories traveling Europe. His last duty assignment was on USS Holland at Holy Loc. After his honorable discharge he went on to work various jobs including the US Corp of Army Engineers, Technical Die Casting Inc, and his last employer was Chartwells Catering at Winona State University where he especially enjoyed his interactions with fellow staff and students.
Bob was formerly married to Mary Jo Hanson (Peplinski), and he is the father of Melissa Johanna Hanson and proud grandfather to Eleanor (Nora) Mary Anderson who reside in Las Vegas, NV. Bob was extremely committed to Melissa's upbringing and the two were deeply involved in sports and extracurriculars. There wasn't a basketball, softball, band, choir, or theater practice, game or performance that Bob did not attend. He was a very hardworking man and role model.
"The Bob" was a champion dart player and can also be remembered fondly for his love of racing, specifically dirt track stock car racing, his devotion to following the Minnesota Twins and his overall love of sports and team camaraderie.
The family would like to express a special Thank You to the Winona Senior High School Class of 1976 for uplifting them in love and support. Bob was very much looking forward to the upcoming 50th class reunion. He truly valued his place with the class of '76
All are welcome to a gathering in Bob (Chipper's) honor Friday, May 8, 2026, from 3 PM to 6 PM at the Winona Eagles Club at 210 E. 4th St. Winona, MN. His graveside service with military honors will be held at 10 AM on Monday, May 11, 2026, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
