Robert P. "Bob" Brom, age 79, of Rollingstone, MN, passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2020. Bob had a long-time battle with cancer and COPD. He was born at home in Winona County, on May 4, 1941, to Paul M. and Martha R. (Wockenfuss) Brom.
Bob attended Phelps grade school, K through sixth grade; St. Mary’s junior high, grades seven through nine; and later graduated from Cotter High School in 1959. In September 1961, Bob joined the US Army and took his basic training at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri. He then transferred to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, to attend supply handlers training. Bob was then transferred to Oakland Army Terminal and sent to Ascom City, South Korea, where he spent 13 months at 6th Medical Depot in the medical corp. After his tour in Korea, he was transferred to Irwin Army Hospital, Fort Riley, Kansas. On November 23, 1963, he married Katherine Andring. They lived in Junction City, Kansas until Bob was honorably discharged from the Army on September 13, 1964, with the rank of Specialist 5th Class. Bob and Kathy moved back to Minnesota and built their own home in rural Rollingstone where they raised five children, daughters: Vickie Jo (Mark) Speltz, Cindy Brown, Kristie (Colin) Olson and Kim (Bryon) Thompson; and son, John (Dawn) Brom.
Bob helped out numerous farmers in the area and later worked at Brom Machine & Foundry Company, where he retired as President. After his retirement, he drove truck for Winona Excavating. Bob liked the outdoors, fishing and hunting, and he was an avid Packer fan. He later passed flight school but could not receive a license due to medical conditions. Bob was known for his sense of humor right up until the end and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathy Brom; his five children; five sisters: Janet (Robert) Czapiewski, Ruth (Harlan) Wills, Rita (OSF) Brom, Gisele (Mike) Duffy and Patrice (Frank) Lager; nine grandchildren: Matt, Courtney, Madeline, Zach, Ryan, Cooper, Jack, AJ and Luke; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, as well as other relatives and friends.
