RICHARD WILLIAM "DICK" SCHNEIDER

Richard William “Dick” Schneider passed away peacefully surrounded by family at St. Anne’s of Winona on March 29, 2017.  He fought a year and a half long battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome which turned into Acute Myeloid Leukemia. He put up a heroic fight even participating in a stem cell transplant.  He maintained a determined attitude until the end.

Dick was born on December 28, 1945 in Sturgeon Bay, WI to John and Vivian Schneider.  He was raised by his loving grandparents William and Louise Nelson in Sheboygan Falls, WI.  He served in the U. S. Navy during Viet Nam on the USS Boxer.

He married Mary Heidemann Schneider, the girl he met on the school bus, just short of 50 years ago, on July 22, 1967. They raised four beautiful children Wendy (Ron) Kresha, Matthew, William(Heather) and Peter(Laura) Schneider.  He was proud of his 12 grandchildren Alexander, Amelia, Adrienne, Aliza and Ainsley Kresha; Nathan, Allison, William, Andrew, Bennett, and Emma Schneider and Benjamin Gray.  His family was of utmost importance to him.

He retired from WSU as a Professor Emeritus after having taught accounting from 1974-2007.  He was also a CPA and enjoyed tax preparation.  He was instrumental in proving free tax preparation through the VITA program for many years.  He also did considerable tax related work following four major floods.  His generous use of his talents was a hallmark of his life.

He proudly served on the Foundation Board of St. Anne’s of Winona for many years.   He was a member of several faith sharing groups and a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s Parish.  He had a gentle spirituality that showed in the faith filled way he lived his life.

He loved golf and fishing and especially enjoyed the Canadian fishing trips every other year with his sons and a select group of special men. If you had the opportunity to golf with him, you probably had some very good discussions with a man who listened well and enjoyed a good conversation.

He is survived by his wife Mary, his children, grandchildren and his brother Warren Schneider as well as extended family that included step and half siblings that he loved dearly as well as his brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins, giving him a full circle of those he loved.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to St. Anne’s of Winona, St. Mary’s Parish Benevolence Fund, Catholic Charities or a charity of your choice that will help the less fortunate.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon Monday, April 17, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winona.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 10am to time of Mass in the Commons of St. Mary’s Church.
