Merrill L. Nienow, age 97, of St. Charles, MN, passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2018, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital – St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester, MN.

Merrill was born on March 12, 1921, in Elba Township, Winona County, Minnesota, to Clemens and Mathilda (Waechter) Nienow.  He was united in marriage with Doris Schermerhorn on November 25, 1944, at Berea Moravian Church in rural St. Charles, and she preceded him in death on February 2, 1995.

He was a member of Berea Moravian Church where he served as a trustee and an elder, and he also served on the Oak View #42 School Board.  Merrill farmed for many years in Elba Township, and will be remembered for his enjoyment of the simpler things in life, especially spending time with his family and friends and playing cards.

Merrill is survived by his sons: James “Jim” (Bernice) Nienow, and Richard (Diedre) Nienow, both of St. Charles, MN; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother, and an infant sister.

Visitation will be held from 9 AM until the funeral service at 11 AM on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at Berea Moravian Church, rural St. Charles, MN.  The Reverend Frank Jones will officiate.  Merrill will be laid to rest in Hillside Cemetery, St. Charles.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be directed to the Perpetual Care Fund of the Berea Moravian Cemetery, or to the Hillside Cemetery Association in St. Charles.
