James Hildebrandt

James R. Hildebrandt, age 96, of Winona, passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2017, at his son’s home in Cottage Grove, MN.

He was born on September 11, 1921, in Winona, to Robert and Theresa (Klonowski) Hildebrandt.  Jim honorably served his country for 3 ½ years with the United States Army.

Jim was united in marriage with Ramona “Sis” Kulas on January 27, 1951, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona, and she preceded him in death on November 14, 2011.

He was employed as a painting contractor for 45 years, and was a member of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka in Winona.  Jim will be remembered for his love of woodworking, and he was an avid fan of Twins and the Vikings.

Survived by children : Paul (Elaine) Hildebrandt, Cottage Grove, MN; Edward (Ginni) Hildebrandt, Lake Elmo, MN; and Vicki Hildebrandt, Rosemount, MN; grandchildren: Candace (Chris) Wenger, Kelly (Wade) Thurman, Phil (Amanda) Hildebrandt, Jenni, Samantha and Laura;

5 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law:  Anna Mae Einhorn and Maxine Kulas, both of Winona; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Jean; son, Robert; brothers: Alfred and Lester Hildebrandt; sisters: Eleanore Watembach, Gertrude Janikowski, Celesta Hildebrandt, and Lorraine Knop; sisters-in-law: Bernadine Sula, Germaine Griffith, and Audrey Sieracki; and a brother-in-law: Raymond Kulas.

Visitation will be held from 10:30 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM on Monday, January 8, 2017, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka.  The Reverend William Kulas will officiate.  Following the Mass, the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 of Winona will provide military honors outside of the Basilica.

Jim will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery at a later date.
