James M. "Jim" Galewski

James M. “Jim” Galewski, age 74, of Winona, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, following a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Jim was born on March 29, 1952, in Winona, to Dominic and Geraldine (Wilkins) Galewski, and was a graduate of Cotter High School. Jim was united in marriage with Anne Woestman on May 12, 1973, in La Crosse, WI.

His life’s work was at the Winona Daily News when it was a real newspaper. Jim was the recipient of many editor and photography awards – winning all of them within the same year. He was also elected as the first president of the Minnesota Newspaper Photographer’s Association.

Jim’s greatest source of pride was serving as the Scoutmaster for the Boy Scout Troop 1, and to have helped 37 Scouts earn their Eagle Scout rank. He was grateful to John Pelowski for taking over as Scoutmaster when he was no longer able to do so. The troop was even lucky enough to have its own campground camp bear thanks to the generosity of the Evanson family.

Jim is survived by the love of his life, and his pride and joy, Anne; son, Joseph (Khem) Galewski; sister, Nancy Springer; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters: Veronica, Diane, and Joane.

Visitation will be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Minnesota City, MN, on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, beginning with the Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary at 3:45 PM and continuing until 7 PM. Visitation will also be held at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Minnesota City on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 9 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM. Fr. Russell Scepaniak will officiate.

Jim will be laid to rest at St. Paul's Cemetery in Minnesota City.

Jim would like to thank all the good people of Winona who were always willing to lend a helping hand to make life easier for him and made MS less of a burden.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that memorials be directed to the Nursing Program at Winona State University.
