Eugene Olson

Eugene H. “Gene” Olson, age 91, a life-long resident of Winona, passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at Lake Winona Manor.

He was born on July 23, 1930, in Winona, to Henry and Verna (Kulas) Olson.  He attended W-K, St. Stan’s, and Cotter Schools; and served his country with the Minnesota State and National Guards.  Gene married Mary Luhmann on July 29, 1961, at the St. Stanislaus Kostka Rectory in Winona.

Gene was employed with Swift and Company, Safranek Meat Market, Peerless Chain, and he also was self-employed as a tree trimmer.  He was a member of the Red Men’s Club, the Machinist Union, and of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka.

He will be remembered as an avid motorcyclist who drove Harley-Davidsons, especially on scenic country roads.  Gene loved traveling with Mary, and they enjoyed two memorable Mississippi River cruises on the American Queen.  Gene loved movies, music, videos, watching football, feeding the birds, and his loving dogs.

Gene is survived by his wife, Mary; and a sister-in-law: Shirley Thomas.  He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 1:30 PM until the funeral service at 2 PM on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, 376 East Sarnia St., Winona.  Deacon Justin Green will officiate.  Gene will be laid to rest in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
