Ellen Ethel (Bates) Mrkvicka, aged 90, of Winona, MN, peacefully passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital – St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester, MN, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on March 9, 1935, in Milwaukee, WI, to Everett and Mabel (Peters) Bates, Ellen graduated from Park High School in Racine, WI. She was married to William F. Mrkvicka for 26 years, after which they divorced.

In 1963, Ellen became a dedicated member of The Order of Eastern Star, where she held various offices and cherished her role as a Minnesota Grand Representative Electa from 2009 to 2010, traveling throughout the state and representing in Rhode Island.

Throughout her career, Ellen held various positions, including working with the Wisconsin Cheeseman in Sun Prairie, WI, and managing both the Eatery at K-Mart and Semcac Senior Dining in Winona. However, she was most well-known for her passion for baking, proudly owning Ellen’s Cake Cupboard in Winona, where her specialty cake decorating brought joy to many.

Ellen's creative talents extended beyond baking to include rosemaling, sewing, and costume making. An avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, her spirit of generosity was exemplified through her willingness to help others and for her love of cooking, especially with her beloved big spaghetti spoon.

A devoted member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Winona, Ellen actively participated in her faith community for many years. Above all, her greatest joy was her family, whom she cherished and delighted in hosting during holidays and family gatherings.

Ellen is lovingly remembered by her children: Cynthia (Greg) Low of Austin, MN; Kathryn Mrkvicka of Winona, MN; and Daniel W. Mrkvicka of Winona, MN. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Zachary Rupprecht of Fountain City, WI, and Daniel M. (Ashley) Mrkvicka of Winona, MN; great-grandchildren: Hunter Holst of Austin, MN, and Kaylee and Caiden Mrkvicka of Winona, MN; her great-great-grandson, Jude Holst of Austin, MN; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents and sisters.

Visitation will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church in Winona on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, from 11 AM until the funeral service at 12 Noon. Pastor Rachel Rosendahl will officiate. Ellen will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Daniel W. Mrkvicka, Daniel M. Mrkvicka, Zachary Rupprecht, Hunter Holst, Troy Whetstone, and Jay Whetstone.
