Edward J. Ratajczyk, age 84, of Winona, known by many names including, “Mr. Coffee Pot,” “Fast Eddie,” “Babe,” “Mr. R,” and “EJR Superstar,” passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by the love of his family with Elvis and the Bee Gees playing in the background. Since he was always the practical joker, it was fitting that he passed away on Friday the 13th.
He was born on May 20, 1941, in Winona, to Edmund and Hazel (Kanz) Ratajczyk, and was a proud 1959 graduate of Winona High School. Ed was united in marriage with Deanna E. Siegel on February 8, 1964, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona.
Ed was the long-time owner and operator of Winona Roofing, where his commitment to quality and service earned him a distinguished reputation. He also instilled a strong work ethic with his boys by taking them along on roofing jobs. Beyond his business, he was known for his supportive roles in the community as a playground supervisor at St. Stan’s School and a roller-skating supervisor at St. Matthew’s in Winona. His natural ability to connect with others was exemplified by his affectionate nickname as a "child and dog whisperer," a testament to the enduring bond he formed with children and pets alike. These qualities made him a beloved figure, not only professionally but also among his neighbors and friends.
From an early age, Ed demonstrated a passion for athletics, particularly hockey. He played for the Winona Hornets during his youth and extended his playing career into semi-professional hockey in Iowa. His love of sports was lifelong, and he was also an active member of the Westfield Golf Club, where he scored at least two holes-in-one. Ed became known as “Fast Eddie” while playing pool at the Hurry Back making money for rent and groceries during the winter. Alongside his sporting interests, Ed enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, including a fondness for Mugby Junction coffee and a sweet tooth that ensured he always had candy close at hand.
Ed is lovingly survived by his wife, Deanna; children: Greg Ratajczyk, John (Joy) Ratajczyk, Scott (Tonya) Ratajczyk, and Dr. Michael (Stacey) Ratajczyk. He was the proud “Papa Eddy” to: Gavin, Miah, Nick, Joe, Ellie Jean, Tyler, Evan, Trace, Henry, and Emma. Ed is further survived by his grand-puppy, Lexi; sisters-in-law: Ginnee, Jani, and Debi; brother-in-law: Greg Fye; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends including a special cousin, Judy Morrison; and life-long friend, Bill Schultz. Ed often said quite often, “I know so many wonderful people.”
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters: Janice Fye and Barbara Cada; and parents-in-law: Myron and Eleanor Siegel.
Visitation will be held at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, 376 E. Sarnia St., Winona, on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 9 AM until the funeral service at 10:30 AM. Fr. Michael Churchill will officiate.
Following the service, a luncheon and reception will be held at the Winona American Legion Club, 302 E. Sarnia St.
Ed’s family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Dialysis at Winona Health – especially Mary and Becky – you helped give us an extra three years; Mugby Junction; and to Winona Health Hospice for the excellent care that he received. They are especially grateful to his granddaughter, Ellie (his Ellie Jean the coconut bean), who so lovingly cared for her papa during his last days.
