Edward V. Malewicki

Edward Vincent Malewicki, age 80, of Winona, passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the Winona Health Hospital.

He was born on June 7, 1943, in Clinton, Iowa, to Edward “Nip” and Vivian Malewicki, and was united in marriage with Kay Neitzke on January 3, 1970.

Ed was drafted into the United States Army in October of 1967, serving as an assistant mess steward of the 8th special forces group (Airborne) from February 22, 1968, to October 14, 1969, reaching the rank of Specialist 5 (SP5).  While serving at Fort Gulick, Panama, Ed received the following citation in a letter of recommendation, “SP5 Malewicki’s keen devotion and professional attitude has achieved innumerable compliments on the 8th Special Forces Group Consolidated Mess Hall and his contributions have been instrumental in receiving superior ratings in two Army IG Inspections and nine Atlantic Area Superior Mess Awards.”

He worked at the original Winona McDonalds for over 20 years, working his way up to General Manager.  In July of 1982, Ed and his wife purchased Ed’s 500 Club, which they operated for 23 years until selling it on July 5, 2005.  Ed sponsored many teams (pool, dart, racing, softball, and other) and enjoyed traveling to watch them perform.

Ed loved spending time on the Mississippi River with his family.  He especially loved taking his dog, Missy, on pontoon boat rides.  The 4th of July was a major Holiday for Ed.  He looked forward to traveling to South Dakota and Missouri to purchase fireworks.   His spectacular fireworks display drew crowds every year.

Ed never drove a vehicle.  He had one driving lesson from his father Nip and that was enough to last him a lifetime.  Instead, Ed enjoyed riding his bicycle around town.  He was commonly seen riding up and down 5th street in the evenings.

Ed is survived by his wife Kay Malewicki; son Michael (Jennifer) Malewicki and their sons Brendan and Carter; son Terry Malewicki; sister Betsy (Jerry) Zenk; sister-in-law Barbara Malewicki; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Edward (Nip) Malewicki; mother, Vivian Malewicki; and brother, Robert “Bob” Malewicki;
