Donald T. Nelson

Donald T. Nelson, age 81, of Winona, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2024, at the Gundersen Health Clinic in Winona.

He was born on May 24, 1942, in Belview, MN, to Vern and Catherine (Donahue) Nelson.  He was a graduate of Cotter High School in Winona, and honorably served his country with the United States Navy from 1960 – 1964.   Don was united in marriage with Patricia Verdick on June 3, 1972, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Winona.

Don attended police training in Arden Hills, MN, and was employed for 22 years as a deputy with the Winona County Sheriff’s Department, and also as a Campus Safety Officer at St. Mary’s University.

He was a member of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka, and was a former member of the Knights of Columbus.

Don will be remembered for his enjoyment of hunting, fishing, bowling, and golfing.  He also looked forward to watching sports on TV, as well as trips with Pat to Treasure Island, Branson, Vegas, and Duluth.

Don is survived by his wife, Pat; children: Kimberly and Charles; brother: Robert (Joyce) Nelson; sister: Jean Polus; sister-in-law: Marian Nelson; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Kenneth Nelson; in-laws: Ted and Florence Verdick; brother-in-law: Pete Polus; and a sister-in-law: Beverly Hundorf.

Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 6 PM on Monday, February 5, 2024, at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, 376 E. Sarnia St., Winona, where a closing prayer service will be held at 6 PM.

Don will be laid to rest in a family ceremony at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, MN.
