David Cyril Smith, age 83, of Winona, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at the Winona Health Hospital.
He was born on March 20, 1942, in Arcadia Township, Trempealeau County, WI, to Cyril and Ravanna (Mrozek) Smith. David was united in marriage with Sandra K. Barum on August 23, 1969, at Central (Wesley) United Methodist Church in Winona.
David was employed for 42 years as a color chemist with RTP in Winona and was also a co-owner of D and D Painting Service. He was a lifetime member of the Winona Eagle’s Club Aerie 1243 and of the Winona Red Men Club.
He had a great love of the outdoors where he enjoyed trapping, fishing (his secret fishing spots were never disclosed), hunting, and spending many hours rowing in his two-seater aluminum yacht on the Mississippi River.
David was an excellent gardener who had beautiful flowers and a plentiful vegetable garden which he generously shared with others. He also enjoyed going to garage sales and auctions, dancing to Rock and Roll and Polkas, bowling, and he and Sandy were faithful spectators at the Tri-Oval/River Raceway in Fountain City.
He will be remembered as an outgoing people person who looked forward to visiting with others, and could talk about almost any topic. He will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him the most.
David is lovingly survived by his wife, Sandy; children: David M. (Tara) Smith, Crystal (Ted Rice) Paffrath, and Patrick Smith; grandchildren: Chris Gierok, Matt Gierok, Allison Boelter, Logan Smith, Jordan Klatt, and Maddy Smith; 7 great-grandchildren; brother: Keith (Tammy) Smith; brother-in-law: Gene Barum; sisters-in-law: Cindy (John) Ehlers and Joyce Dondlinger; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother: Ron Smith; sister and brother-in-law: Shirley and Dan Dingfelder; and brothers-in-law: Jerry Barum and Gary Dondlinger.
Honoring his wishes, funeral services will be held privately for his family. A celebration of his life is being planned for a later date.
