Bonnie Jean Speltz

Bonnie Jean Speltz, 79, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Sugar Loaf Senior Living.

Bonnie was born December 8, 1946, in Rochester, MN, to Helen and Frank Chapman. She graduated from Cotter High School.

She was married to Bruce Tanberg for 18 years and they had two children, Bruce II, and Bobbi Jean. They enjoyed family trips, camping, dancing, and cross-country skiing. She was known for hosting gatherings at her home, beautiful holiday decorations and delicious food.

Bonnie was recognized as one of the top Avon sales representatives in the state. She enjoyed visiting her clients and still being home when the kids came home from school.

Bonnie had an adventurous spirit, traveling alone to Australia and driving by herself in a camper van to Pennsylvania. She enjoyed gardening, water exercise, and spending time with friends. One of her greatest passions and skills was shopping. She took pride in buying nice things for her family and friends while getting the best deal ever.

She later married Anthony Speltz. During their marriage, they enjoyed dancing, traveling, and lots of special time with family. She especially treasured her role as a grandma.

Bonnie utilized her mother’s intuition, caring, and patience as a Health Secretary at the Winona Middle School, until she retired after 22 years. Being around the students and teachers kept her feeling young, and ready for the next adventure.

Leroy Heltne was the love of her life. They brought out the best in each other. Together they loved camping, fishing, and taking many trips with friends. The highlight of their travels was Alaska. Wherever they traveled, finding good places to eat was a priority.

Bonnie is survived by her children, Bruce A. Tanberg II (Rochester, MN) and Bobbi Jean Tanberg-Mitchell (Todd) of Winona; her youngest sister, Barbara Halvorson (Ray); niece, Kim (Brad Fakler) Morphew; numerous cousins, and her best friend and beloved companion, Toots. She was proceeded in death by her parents; her sister, Betty Cordes; Leroy Heltne; and former husband Bruce Tanberg.
