Bernard A. “Ben” Schultz, age 95, of Winona, passed away on Sunday, November 4, 2018, at Sauer Health Care in Winona.
Ben was born on November 10, 1922, in Winona, to Bernard and Mildred (Wieczorek) Schultz. He was a graduate of St. Stanislaus Grade School, Cotter High School, and St. Mary’s College in Winona; and he also completed graduate work at the University of Minnesota, Indiana University, and DePaul University. While at the University of Minnesota, Ben appeared in productions at the Old Log Theater, and the St. Paul Civic Opera.
He began his teaching career in the English Department at the Winona Teachers College, and later Winona State University. Following teaching assignments at the high schools in Butterfield, MN and Kasson, MN, he worked at the Army Education Centers in Japan and Korea.
After returning to the States, Ben spent 23 years teaching in the Chicago Public School system. After retiring to Winona in 1978, he became active in his parish, the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka, where he took part in its Parish Council; the Adult, Funeral, and Polish Choirs; volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul Store; and also gave presentations on the parish history to visiting tour groups. In honor of his service to his parish, Ben was awarded the Bishop’s Medal by Bishop John Quinn.
Within the community, he was also active with the Story Theater, the Fountain City Community Choir, and was a long-time volunteer at the Polish Museum.
Ben is survived by his brother: Robert Schultz, Winona; sister: Mary (Dick) Holmay, Bloomington, MN; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roy Schultz in 1987; and sisters, Mildred Weeman in 2014, and Patricia Kubisiak in 2016.
Visitation will be held from 11 AM until the Mass of Christian Burial at noon on Friday, November 9, 2018, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka. The Reverend Paul J. Breza will officiate. Ben will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Polish Museum.
