Arline A. Volkmann

Arline A. Volkmann, age 89, of Winona, joined the Church Triumphant on Sunday, March 1, 2026, while in the care of Benedictine – St. Anne in Winona.

She was born on October 28, 1936, on the family farm north of Lewiston, MN, to Martin and Sophia (Uecker) Burfeind. Arline graduated from Lewiston High School, and attended Concordia College in St. Paul, and Concordia University in River Forest, IL.

Arline married James Roger Volkmann on June 18, 1960, at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church – Silo, where she was also baptized and confirmed.

She taught school at St. John’s Lutheran School in Young America, MN, and at Immanuel Lutheran School – Silo, in rural Lewiston. She also taught Title I at St. Martin’s Lutheran School in Winona, and was the Office Manager of the Math-Statistics Department at Winona State University for 20 years until her retirement in 2000.

Arline was a long-time member of St. Martin’s Ev. Lutheran Church who had a strong Christian faith and was a firm believer in the power of prayer. While her children and grandchildren were growing up, she was very active at St. Martin’s Lutheran School and Hope Lutheran High School.

She loved to spend time with her family, read, play cards, and she spent 20 wonderful winters in Arizona enjoying the warm weather with her husband and many friends.

Arline is lovingly survived by her husband, James Volkmann; daughter, Cheryl (John) Mulyck; son, David (Deborah) Volkmann; grandchildren: Kalene (Calvin) Schleich and Christopher Volkmann; great-grandchildren: Grayson Schleich and Eliza Schleich; sister-in-law: Colleen Volkmann; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Sophia Burfeind; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Marvin and Florence Volkmann; and a brother-in-law, Bruce E. Volkmann.

PLEASE NOTE DATE AND TIME CHANGE: Visitation will be held at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, 376 E. Sarnia St., Winona, on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, from 4 PM until 7 PM. Visitation will also be held at St. Martin's Ev. Lutheran Church in Winona on Thursday, March 19, 2026, from noon until the funeral service at 1 PM. The Reverend Richard A. Moore will officiate.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials being directed to Hope Lutheran High School or to St. Martin’s Ev. Lutheran Church Building Fund.

Arline’s family would like to thank Winona Health, Winona Health Hospice, and Benedictine – St. Anne for the loving care that she received.
