Alice M. Kaldunski, age 83, of Madison, WI, and formerly of Winona, went to heaven, being held in the arms of her beloved niece, Mollie, on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at Agrace Hospice Care in Fitchburg, WI.
The daughter of Roman and Mary (Kulas) Kaldunski, Alice was born at her parent’s home in Winona on June 28, 1935, and was a graduate of Winona Senior High School. Following high school, Alice enlisted in the Navy, serving from 1954-1958. She attended St. Teresa’s College in Winona, receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1961, followed by teaching for five years. Alice then went on to earn her Masters Degree from Winona State University and the University of Kentucky at Louisville.
Alice again answered the call of the Navy and returned as a commissioned officer from 1962-1966. Most of her service was spent in Hawaii, which was still healing after the devastation of World War II.
The last 25 years of her career in education was as a guidance counselor at Madison’s East High School, where for her last three years, she was in charge of the “School at Night” program.
In her retirement, Alice had the time to care for her mother, and to also be an amazing aunt to her brother’s children, who adored her.
Alice had a deep devotion to her faith, and was a member of St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Madison, where she faithfully attended Sunday Mass. She was also a member of the Oregon Town and Country Organization, WAVES National, NEA, and WEAC.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Roman and Mary; brother and sister-in-law: Robert and Rita Kaldunski; and nephews: Norbert Gerschau and Martin Kaldunski.
She is survived by her nieces: Christina Smith, Mollie Boggan and Karen Salis; great-nephews and great-nieces: Steven and Brandy Smith; Kaitlyn, Kourtney and Gage Boggan; Joseph Scofield Kaldunski; Imajen, Leif, Wyatt, Kristian, and Kyailah Cruse; Aviana and Issabella Salis; Kaden and Cassius Boggan, Baby Whitley, and Aliyah Kanthack. She is also survived by her good friends: Doris Koster, Nancy Byrd, Virginia Krueger, Dawn Grelle, and Elaine Ziegl.
Alice’s family would like to thank the amazing staff at Agrace Hospice for the care she received during the last week of her life, and also to the staff of Brookdale Assisted Living for the kindness and care they gave to Alice the 8 months prior to her stay at Agrace.
Visitation will be held from 1 PM until the funeral service at 2 PM on Friday, June 7, 2019, at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home. Deacon Justin Green will officiate. Following the service, the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9 of Winona will provide military honors at the funeral home. A luncheon and reception will be held at the Winona American Legion Club, 302 East Sarnia Street.
Alice will be laid to rest in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
