George Tropple

U.S. Veteran

George Tropple, age 84, of Winona, MN, passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.


George was born on May 21, 1929, in Winona, MN, to Norman and Elizabeth (Janikowski) Tropple.  On October 4, 1952, he was united in marriage with Janice Breitung, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Winona.


He proudly served his country with the United States Navy during WWII, after enlisting at the age of 16.  George was a member of the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka and the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post 9.  For 30 years, he was employed by the US Army Corps of Engineers.


Visiting with his buddies at Westfield was always a favorite activity.  He was an avid golfer and was noted for making his famous horseradish and sauerkraut.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. 


George is survived by his wife: Janice Tropple; children: Dianne (Jerome) Cordes, David (Connie) Tropple, Dan (Sandra) Tropple, Debbie (Robert) Schaefer and Denise (Thomas) Malewicki; grandchildren: Bradley (Gina) Cordes, Stacy (Edward) Laschewski, Tina (Jason) Poss, Brent Cordes, Erik (Annie) Tropple, Kristina Tropple, Kyle Timmerman, Kelly Timmerman, Kari Pederson, Katie (Andrew) Freres, Melinda (special friend, Adam) Schaefer, Jennifer (Shawn) Naser, Heidi Malewicki and Kyle Malewicki; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters: Shirley Zimmerman, Margarete (Victor) Gottschalk and Barb (Bill) Getty; brothers: Robert (Rita) Tropple and Donald (Pat) Tropple; sister-in-law: Bonnie (Fred) Shaw; nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Art (Bea) Tropple; sister, Carole (Verle) Johnson; and sister-in-law: Merridy (Dick) Berg.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1 PM, on Monday, October 7, 2013, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka.


The Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Hargesheimer and Reverend Richard Dernek will concelebrate.


George will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN, at a later date.


Visitation will be held at the Watkowski-Mulyck Funeral Home, on Sunday, October 6, 2013, from 4 PM until 7 PM, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:30 PM.  Visitation will also be held from 12 Noon until 12:45 PM, on Monday, October 7, 2013, at the Basilica of St. Stanislaus Kostka.


Pallbearers will be George’s grandchildren.
